Sustainable wood furniture
Living green doesn’t have to mean giving up the beauty and durability of wooden furniture. Many furniture makers are now offering alternatives to traditional wood furniture with green furniture selections made with sustainable woods. Here’s one I found today:
This environmentally friendly dining room table is made by Atlantico. It’s handmade using woods harvested via sustainable forestry practices, and it’s certified by the Forestry Stewardship Council, a non-profit organization dedicated to responsible forestry. This table is made without toxic chemicals and preservatives and is finished with only a coat of Danish oil. The table is simple in design and I think it would blend well with any green home decor. I found this green furniture selection at Bluehouse.

Bamboo room divider
Here’s an environmentally-friendly product for creating a cozy area in your green home. This bamboo room divider is made of pesticide-free bamboo stalks. It rolls up, and is flexible so you can position it in nearly any shape. You could use this green home accessory for hiding an unsightly computer area, creating a cozy corner for reading, or as a backdrop for large potted plants.
This bamboo screen is pesticide free and it is treated with a non-toxic water repellent. Not sure if I would try this with your green landscaping- it’s rated for indoor use only. I found this green living idea at Real Goods.

Bamboo bathroom vanity
Doing a green bathroom remodel? Check out this bamboo bathroom vanity by Linea Aqua. I love the look of the bamboo cabinetry with chrome highlights, which would really tie in well with some chrome bathroom accessories like a soap dispenser and towel rack. Bamboo is considered a green building material because it is a plentiful and renewable natural resource. And, did you know bamboo cabinetry and furniture is more durable than other woods because is harder and can naturally withstand more moisture absorption? This bamboo bathroom cabinet is 34 inches tall and comes with the marble counter top, porcelain sink, and back splash shown in the photo. I think bamboo furniture as beautiful as this is proof that a green remodel can be just as fabulous, if not more fabulous, than a traditional bathroom remodel.

Polywood outdoor furniture
Looking for a tree-free alternative to wooden patio furniture? You may want to check out the many polywood varieties popping up in the market. Polywood is a wood-free lumber substitute that is designed to last for years. Polywood furniture is made with high-density plastic. Polywood patio furniture is designed to stand up to tough weather and it is available in many colors, so you don’t have to paint it. It also doesn’t rot or support the bacterial growth common in wooden outdoor furniture. Polywood is not an overlay adhesive type product; it is a solid material that is screwed together just like traditional wooden furniture. Polywood is used to make everything from environmentally friendly picnic tables to complete 5- piece patio sets. Since you’ll likely never have to replace polywood furniture, you’ll do the environment a favor by saving a few trees in the long run.

Maui lounge chair
Hand carved from a solid piece of cedar, Maui Chair is my lounge chair dream come true. It’s almost too nice to use as outdoor furniture, though it really blends in with its natural surroundings.
Available at Usona
* NOT to be confused with the ubiquitous plastic Maui stacking Chair by Vico Magistretti for Kartell dating back to the 50’s.

Perpetual home motion machines
More wonderful concepts from Bless - Perpetual home motion machines. My first thought was that these would work really well in a studio or a college dorm room, but not exclusively. These living mobiles are a really innovative way to experience your own space. It’s a dynamic display of your daily possessions versus the static nature-morte, which is what the designers aimed to accomplish. Sculpture slash green furniture, if you like.
Bless# 22 concept: “A moving fragment of a person’s wardrobe and furniture which allows to reflect and transmit privacy. This furniture arose from the question of how to keep garments tidy and on display at the same time, suitable for both private and public use. The result - a new type of wardrobe: a hanging, room encompassing, perpetually twisting piece of furniture in perfect balance. Bless design doesn’t exist without interaction, selfexperienced application and love of the user.“

Playing house
Via another Design Bitch lead, I found this playful and adorable alternative to the old linen cloth. Designed by a German duo Bless, and named unpretentiously tablecloth, it resonates with the childhood nostalgia of “playing house” under the family dining room table. It is everything you wished you could do to your mom’s tablecloth back then and more. Why not? It still serves it’s primary function, which is to protect the table top from stains and scratches… only now a lot more fun beneath the surface.
For more traditional options, check out these tablecloths.

Modern Bamboo Spring Chair
The Modern Bamboo Spring Chair became an instant wish list item for me from the moment I saw it. Just wish it didn’t cost an arm and a leg, plus the other arm and leg ($700 each, to be exact). Designed by Anthony Marschak last year, the Spring Chair is made from a single piece of 100% laminated bamboo and comes in three colors: Amber, Cherry and Ebony. As you can see, the name Spring Chair is derived from its body-conforming curve and the flexibility of the material.
