Halloween Decorations

If you haven’t already switched to CFL bulbs, you could start out by buying them to use as Halloween decorations.  I love that these are now available in black and orange for setting the mood at your green Halloween party.  CFL bulbs fit into any standard light fixture, and they’re a lot easier on the environment, because they last much longer and use less energy. I found these Halloween light bulbs at Builder’s Square.

Throwing a Halloween party doesn’t have to mean throwing out your green living priorities. Here are a few green ideas for Halloween decorations:

Fair Trade Halloween Décor: I love these traditional Mexican papel picado Halloween decorations (pictured above) from the Fair Trade online store. When packed away carefully, these cool black skeletons could be used for your Halloween parties year after year.

Halloween Luminaries: Reuse tin cans by turning them into glowing Halloween décor. Here’s how:

Gather up some used tin cans, like those used for canned vegetables and fruit, remove any labels and lids if they happen to be still attached, and then wash them.  Then think of what kind of designs you’d like on your Halloween luminaries.  Using a large nail and a hammer, make holes in your cans to create designs out of dots.  You can also draw your dot design on paper first, and then tape it around the cans before you make the holes.  When the designs are finished, add tea lights to illuminate them.  If you want, you can even make handles out of string or wire for hanging your luminaries.

Make this a family recycling project!  Your kids will love thinking of designs, painting their homemade Halloween decorations, and you’ll be passing on your green living priorities. You could also ask a local restaurant for a commercial size tin can for making a giant luminary. Here are the complete instructions for making Halloween luminaries out of tin cans.

Go Organic!: Let’s not overlook the obvious here. Mother Nature provides plenty of her own beautiful Halloween decorations. Use pumpkins, squash and apples on the tables at your Halloween party to create a beautiful autumn atmosphere. When the party’s over, use them up in your favorite fall recipes, or send them home with your guests!
